North Carolina A&T;'s College Access Conference
The University of North Carolina General Administration state GEAR UP grant sponsored its annual College Access Conference, February 11-13, 2004, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Practitioners and policymakers from across the state and across the region came together to share best practices, hone partnerships, and establish new relationships, in an effort to increase students’ access to postsecondary education. This year’s conference introduced a student forum that focused on leadership, college exploration, enrichment activities, and a student-centered critique of existing pre-college initiatives. Coined the “Youth Summit for College Access” and composed of 15 ninth-grade students from Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), North Carolina Math and Science Education Network (MSEN), North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NCA&TSU;) GEAR UP, Appalachian State University Upward Bound, and Chatham County GEAR UP. The conference afforded students a captive audience with whom they could share their perspectives of the most and least effectives strategies utilized by pre-college access programs. In addition, students worked with faculty at the University of North Carolina in Wilmington on metal art designs and faculty at the Cape Fear Community College television studio to develop a videotape. The American Council on Education, College is Possible Initiative, GEAR UP NC, and NCA&T; State University and GEAR UP NC collaborated in sponsoring the Youth Summit.
